Shopify is the premier eCommerce platform on the web. With customizable templates, a feature-rich API, social media integration, a POS system and thousands of custom apps that can be applied to each store, Shopify is arguably the most powerful online platform for now only ordering but also managing the entire order/inventory process for your business. Use it to connect your EDI systems or integrate any system to it really.
Some of the things at which Shopify excels
Ecommerce
The stores are quick to set up, easy to manage and have hundreds, if not thousands of templates from which you can choose. Or you can create your own design if you so desire.
Centralized ordering platform
Centralize your company processes by allowing Shopify to house your inventory and make it the cental point of your business. Orders can go in and come out, inventory can go in and come out and all in real-time if you want.
Digital catalog management tool
You can create feature-rich product listings including images, links, videos and in-depth product descriptions and SO MUCH MORE. Now your catalog can be available to the world instantly or you can provide listings by permission level if you only want certain customers to see certain product listings
Real-time notification of store events via web hooks
Web hooks allow Shopify to tell YOU when something happens so you can make decisions in real-time. No longer do you have to make endless queries via API to see if some data has changed/updated.
Built-in fraud analysis
Shopify will investigate every order and assign it a risk score so you can tell if it believes the order is fraudulent. You can then make an informed decision on whether to accept or reject the order without having to guess at whether there is any risk.
Why should you care about any of this?
Shopify stores are fast to set up so you can get your offering to the masses as quickly as you can want. No longer do you have to find a web developer, web designer and wait for weeks to get results. Get your site up and running virtually instantly.
Built-in API functionality makes a Shopify solution immensely powerful. This is more than a website, set up and connected correctly, it can be an ordering and inventory management tool. Orders can flow into it from your ERP so that your team can manage them centrally from anywhere in the world. Inventory can be synced across multiple sources to one centralized place so your customers, sales reps and management teams can get real-time inventory information. Shipping integrations can happen here as well which will make sure to keep your inventory levels synced with actual shipments as they occur.
A few of the things that you can integrate:
Orders
Pull your orders in from your ERP and manage them here. Push your website orders to your ERP automatically. Sync other ordering sources to Shopify so you have one place to manage all of them.
Order fulfillments (shipments)
Run all your shipments through Shopify if you want. They can do that. Want to ship outside Shopify? Go for it, external shipping information can be pulled into Shopify to create fulfillments and notify your customers in real-time when their products are shipping.
Parts (Inventory, pricing, warehouse locations, etc)
For years, part data has been notoriously difficult to keep your arms around. Now, by centralizing it in Shopify, you can manage it in one place and use it to push data out to your customers. It can be pulled for EDI, text file or virtually any other method you like just by using their comprehensive APIs.
Customer data
With all plans other than the Basic Shopify plan, you can get valuable information about your customers. Create long-term customers by offering sales specials, discounts and promos to your best customers.
Sales channels
You can tag orders with custom tags that allow you to group them by whatever attributes you want – Customer, Promotion, Product Categories. The posibilities are endless.
Now lets talk EDI integration!
EDI and Shopify happily co-exist together.
Using the Shopify API, you can easily create orders in Shopify from your 850s; Send 855 order acknowledgements; Generate 856s when orders are fulfilled; Send 810s to your customers when the orders are completely paid and fulfilled; Send detailed 832s from your product listings; and send accurate 846s from your centralized inventory management area, including by warehouse when you set it up this way
So, how much does Shopify cost?
Basic Plan
The “Basic” plan is $29 a month when you pay for a year ($39 a month if you just pay monthly). The Basic plan gets you most of everything except for PII (personally identifiable information) such as customer names, emails and addresses. This is a good solution if you just want to use Shopify to handle your entire ordering process from start to finish. This allows you to create one store.
Shopify Plan
The “Shopify” plan is $79 a month when you pay for a year ($89 a month if you just pay monthly). The Shopify plan gives you full access to all PII via the API so you can pull this information into your ERP, marketing systems or whatever else you use to keep in contact with your customers. This allows you to create one store.
Advanced Plan
The “Advanced” plan is $299 a month when you pay for a year ($399 a month if you just pay monthly). The Advanced plan gives you full access to all PII via the API so you can pull this information into your ERP, marketing systems or whatever else you use to keep in contact with your customers. This allows you to create one store.
Shopify Plus
The “Shopify Plus” plan starts at $2300 a month. While this seems pricy, consider that you can make API calls at a much higher frequency. This is ideal for companies with multiple ordering sources that you want to integrate into your site(s) as well as companies with a lot of parts to sync. Also, you can create up to 25 stores which ends up MUCH cheaper than setting up multiple individual stores.
